National Recognition Village Day is celebrated annually on February 15th to recognize the "Village Movement," a network of community-based organizations helping older adults age independently at home. Originating in 2002 with Beacon Hill Village in Boston, this initiative now includes over 300 villages nationwide.
Village Without Walls is a member of this network of intentional caring communities of neighbors helping neighbors to age well.
Purpose: Celebrates the impact of, and raises awareness for, local, non-profit "villages" that provide services like transportation, social events, and support to seniors.
Significance: It highlights a cost-effective, sustainable model for aging that fosters community connection rather than isolation.
Recognition: The day is recognized in the U.S. House of Representatives to honor the, now over 20-year-old, movement.
